A number of recent reports have suggested Google is working on a smartwatch of its own, possible called Gem, the Nexus Watch or possibly just Google Watch. Until recently we didn’t know much of anything about the rumored wearable device, but a new report from 9to5Google suggests the rumored smartwatch could launch in the near future and offer software built around the company’s popular Google Now service.
Putting Google Now at the center of a smartwatch OS makes sense. The search giant is already establishing its digital assistant as the centerpiece for its suite of mobile apps. The service generates information Cards designed to offer up information before you can even ask for them—perfect for a small-screened device with limited physical controls. It also offers voice search, and links up with other Google apps, which could be easily launched onto a synced smartphone and even onto the smartwatch itself, offering direct access to maps, email and more.
