Microsoft Warns Against Fake Xbox One Backwards Compatibility


A rather cruel "prank" is doing the rounds on the internet, originating from 4chan and claiming to "unlock" the Xbox One's backward's compatibility with Xbox 360 titles. The problem is, that it doesn't unlock said compatibility , and will probably brick your console .

Microfost made the Xbox One with the understanding that there would be no way to offer true backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 games.

The Fake images utilizes the Xbox One developers menus that were discover in the earlier week, and exploits the average user's gullibility by looking fairly technical and official. It looks like Microsoft wasn't kidding when it asked folks nicely to not muck around with the dev menus .

Microsoft's head of Xbox Live Programming Larry Hryb has also weighed in on this issue with his twitter feed.

Though backwards compatibility is not officially supported on Xbox One, Microsoft has suggested in the future, users may be able to stream older games through the cloud.

"There are so many things that server can do. Using our Azure cloud servers, sometimes its thinks like voice processing. It could be more complicated things like rendering full games like a Gaikai, delivering it to the box, " Microsoft director of product planning Albert penello said in september. " We just have to figure out how, over time , how much does that cost to deliver , how good is the experience. "
